Hello All,
It was 26 June 1967 and at the US Tactical Command & Control (TACC) at Monkey Mountain near Da Nang staff watched in disbelief as an F-4C (Serial No. 63-7577) of the 390 TFS/366 TFW being ferried from Clark Air Base in the Phillipines to Da Nang was lured electronically into Chinese airspace and shot down by a ChiCom MiG-17. As the crew of pilot Major J.C. Blandford and WSO 1st Lt. J.M. Jarvis were bobbing in the South China Sea, a ChiCom boat began actively closing in on the two men. Making a decision to risk war to rescue them, a young Air Force officer named 1st Lt. William Peterson instructed a pair of F-102 “Deuces” of the 64th Fighter Interceptor Squadron to take out the ChiCom boat—“Permission granted, sink the $@#&&^%!”
Please enjoy these narratives written by Major Peterson himself:
MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY – Gunfighter 69 going down!
Sequel to MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY Gunfighter 69 going down!
LtCol Peterson (USAF ret.) is currently in the final stages of writing a book detailing the Battle of Lima Site 85 10-11 March 1968.
